The loneliest job in the world? I used to think that it was a lighthouse keeper, but there have not been any of those for the last few decades as all the lighthouses have become automated.
However, last night, whilst leaving London on a train, I encountered a very lonely profession. The train guard. Rebeka was the Eastern European woman charged with the job of checking tickets and selling them to those who didn't have them.
A motley mixture of passengers on the 2225 out of London Victoria treated her with a mixture of disdain, irritation and rudeness. I quite liked her. Firm features but a weary look of someone who was resigned it was going to be a long night ahead.
At one point during our chat she cracked a smile. If I wasn't married I would have asked for her number. Long days, booze and stress meant that poor old Rebeka was the brunt of much displeasure. I've thought about her a lot today. Nothing sexual, but I just wonder how she puts up with it night after night. It's got to be one of loneliest jobs in the world. ·26/02/2010 21:27:39
